Sulidae (a solo musical project from Bobby Motherwell) is delighted to announce the release of the album Kitchen Sink Dharma, which will be released on 5th August 2022 on CD and available to stream and download on all platforms.
“Sulidae are fronted by poetic wordsmith Bobby Motherwell, whose storytelling skills make him sound like some unholy godchild of Aidan Moffat and Ivor Cutler. A complete delight.” Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music
“Kitchen Sink Dharma is the debut album by Sulidae. Featuring the superlative songs and poetry of Bobby Motherwell.” Ian Anderson, BBC Radio Scotland
“This album is stunning. Get involved.” Ross Wilson, Blue Rose Code
“…this is a super album… it just blew me away … a beautiful sparseness… take it from me, it is a fabulous album” Ronnie McGhie, Pulse 98.4FM
“…a terrific collection of songs.” Alistair Braidwood, Scots Whay Hae, CamGlen Radio
“…sung with a fine Scots burr, it kind of knocked us out by how good it is”
“…the players are among the cream of the crop when it comes to Scottish players”
“… Motherwell and his troupe weave a quite magical tapestry of songs and sounds”
“… with Motherwell able to capture the pathos of writers such as Louden Wainwright and Richard Thomson… and earthiness of early Gerry Rafferty.”
“… there are two spoken word tracks...like a Ted Hughes poem with a Scottish accent…” Paul Kerr, Blabber ‘n’ Smoke
“Kitchen Sink Dharma is an album of songs and spoken word in the true sense of the word, it should, and I hope is listened to as a conventional album. The songs are incredibly personal to me and address the age old subject matter of love and loss, and the spiritual healing in finding a personal Dharma which brings peace to our lives and everything around us.”
Musical contributors to this album need no introduction and Bobby is delighted that the following musicians were able to add their magic to his songs and to this project, they are:
Kirsten Adamson – backing vocals, Andy Lucas – keys, Duncan Lyle – upright bass, Colin Steele – trumpet, and Alice Allen – cello. Bobby plays guitars and banjo. The album was mixed and recorded by Garry Boyle at Slate Room Studios, Pencaitland, and produced by Garry Boyle and Bobby Motherwell.
With songs such as A Letter and a Blessing (the lead single from the album) and Unspoken Sulidae reflects on the emotional impact of loss, and of moving on or trying to move on against seemingly impossible odds. The Child in the Growing Old and Brand New Day provide a positive and uplifting reflection of how the choices we make and the attitudes we nurture and develop, can really impact our mental health and spiritual awareness. There are two spoken word pieces; How Peace Was Won and The Silence Was Deafening both of which are accompanied by ambient sounds, keyboards, and resonator guitar and trumpet respectively; bringing a complimentary and natural storytelling feel to balance and bookend both “sides” of the album. The album artwork consists of photographs taken by Bobby Motherwell on the Isle of Eigg, where the majority of the ideas for his lyrics were born and sculpted.
Within the 9 tracks of the album, Sulidae also touches on debilitating introversion which plagued him as a younger man, and without dwelling on maudlin introspection, he reflects on how over the years, a found peacefulness and tranquillity that age has brought with it, can help us to overcome and even harness these insecurities in a creative capacity.

Thanks for "Red Kites". Well, the whole album actually. Saw an Uncut magazine review out here in the southern Utah dust and thought I should give it a listen. Glad I did. Jerry Cooney
